Hi all,

Having just purchased an iBook G3 (for £13, no less!) I have been doing some research into the specifics of the G3 line.

I have discovered that around the time my version was released (a November 2002 800mhz), Apple offered it with either a Crystal or Opaque casing.

Does anybody have any pictures showing the difference between the two options?

Also, I have discovered that the 800mhz iBook has a tendency to be very unreliable, so what should I look out for?

Thanks in advance :D

Crystal cases are an off-white colour and have a transparent keyboad (Like the G3 Clamshells). The Opaque are white just like the iBook G4s and have a all white keyboard.

The crystal cases have transparent plastics with the innerside painted white. It isn't easy to see the difference in pictures but there are case mods you can see online where people have stripped off the paint with alcohol to leave a see-through case.

Here's a picture I found where someone did just that.

That iBook is missing the aluminum shield on the bottom... That may cause problems but I am not sure. It looks like the graphics chip has the pad transferring heat directly to the plastic
