I know this sounds weird but...

There is a ticking sound coming from the iBook, and NO it is not the hard drive clicking. It sounds like a clock, and it ticks exactley once every second.

Anyone know what this is?

yeah, the desktop clock! go to your preference panel and go to date and time (don't know the exact names, everything is in Dutch here...). There should be a box that is on, which should be off!!, that let's you control this annoying feature (blinking seconds or something). Looks like someone is messing with you. Can't find this feature in X.4.2, but I know for sure it was built in in os 9.

And if that does not fix it....then there must be a bomb inside waiting to explode  ;).
Seriously, I had that problem on an older powerbook and had to do the same thing.
