Hi all,

I have searched through various forums for hours but still no solution, so here I am..

I have an ibook G3 dual usb which was running Tiger but after an update to 10.4.11 I think it is, was running very slowly and the browser (i tried safari, camino and firefox) was constantly crashing. I have a back-up copy of retail Tiger on DVD as my original disc is scratched and no longer reads.

I erased the hdd in hope of a clean install, but when I tried to boot from the dvd it just showed up with the flashing ? I know the disc will boot as it works in my G4 powerbook.

I have since installed OS X 10.1 on the iBook. When I insert the Tiger DVD, I get the message "You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To use the unreadable drive...ect"

What can I do to make the disc boot???

Thanks in Advance.

When you turn the computer on(with dvd inserted) holding down the option key, does it show the dvd as a bootable disc option? If so, you should click on it and press the right pointed arrow and continue the install.

If the computer doesn't recognize the disc, you may want to think of using other mac(friend's?) to install Tiger via target disk mode.

There may be more options I don't know of.

Good luck

Duff-Man says....if I recall correctly, those iBooks shipped with several different optical drive configurations, one of which was just a simple CD drive - if that is yours then it explains why it won't read the DVD.....oh yeah!

Are you sure that ibook has a DVD reader? It came standard with a either a cd-rom or cdrw, the dvd reader was an option though.

Doh! the duffman beat me too it.

dvd drive

Yes it definitely has a dvd drive, I have tested it playing dvd movies and dvd with data burnt to them.

I have borrowed a friends firewire cable so hopefully can install from my powerbook... fingers crossed..

External Drive

I have an iBook in the shape of a clamshell. so i try installing tiger with the dvd-rom drive. Does not work then i try an external dvd drive and it boots. Now i have a bigger problem tiger isnt compatible with my iBook.

Ive found a fix, First, you need to install OS X (Puma) 10.1. One youve installed that, you can then update it. I had this same problem.
