Howdy all! I've got a stumper here. I just got an iBook off eBay; it was described as working. It does indeed work well enough, except for the trackpad. Upon startup, it works well for about 20 seconds, then starts to get jittery, missing a lot of movements. After about 30 seconds of jitteriness, it starts missing large swaths of movement. After about a minute total, it stops working at all aside from occasional jerks. Once it stops moving, it seems convinced that there is a second finger on there and will only scroll or two-finger click.

I have disassembled the iBook to install a new hard drive and a superdrive, and inside there is plenty of evidence of water damage. Corrosion on the internal frame primarily around the hard disk and ports. There was a bit on top of the heatsink.

Before the "Durr, it's water damaged" posts come in (I know, I know :p ) I'd like to get this machine working. Where would you start? What in there would make the trackpad slowly degrade over a minute or two? I'm perfectly fine doing a full teardown, washing, desoldering and soldering components, etc. Thanks :D

My gut says that it's some kind of grounding issue (Durr, it's water damaged!) but I'm hoping that someone with a bit more experience with iBooks might pinpoint where to start looking!

I'd start with replacing the trackpad ribbon cable. If that doesn't work, then replace the trackpad. If that does not work, then it's got to be damage on the LB.

Not sure if you can individually replace those parts on an iBook (you can on a PowerBook) so it may require a new top case (if there is such a thing for the iBook).
