Howdy all! I've got a stumper here. I just got an iBook off eBay; it was described as working. It does indeed work well enough, except for the trackpad. Upon startup, it works well for about 20 seconds, then starts to get jittery, missing a lot of movements. After about 30 seconds of jitteriness, it starts missing large swaths of movement. After about a minute total, it stops working at all aside from occasional jerks. Once it stops moving, it seems convinced that there is a second finger on there and will only scroll or two-finger click.
I have disassembled the iBook to install a new hard drive and a superdrive, and inside there is plenty of evidence of water damage. Corrosion on the internal frame primarily around the hard disk and ports. There was a bit on top of the heatsink.
Before the "Durr, it's water damaged" posts come in (I know, I know
) I'd like to get this machine working. Where would you start? What in there would make the trackpad slowly degrade over a minute or two? I'm perfectly fine doing a full teardown, washing, desoldering and soldering components, etc. Thanks
My gut says that it's some kind of grounding issue (Durr, it's water damaged!) but I'm hoping that someone with a bit more experience with iBooks might pinpoint where to start looking!
