I have just been given a dead 14” iBook 1.42GHz. Pressing the power button elicits no response. Holding down the power button for a second or two and the fan spins up at full whack and I get a single long beep before it dies again. Sounds like a loose connection around the vreg chip. Or so I thought.

On opening up the base to expose the logic board I noticed that there is no vreg chip. That part of the LB is unpopulated and it doesn’t look as if it has been removed, rather that one was never there in the first place.

I’m flummoxed. Does anyone have any experience with these iBooks and their foibles?
