iBook G4 at 1680 x 1050?

So yeah. I have a 20" Widescreen monitor en route. It has VGA inputs so I'm good there for connecting my iBook G4. When I hook my iBook G4 up to my 15" CRT and have the screen span hack enabled I can run at many resolutions higher than 1024 x 768 (the iBook's laptop screen resolution). I think I can even get 1600 x 1200 and such.

So my question is... has anybody been able to get their iBook G4 to run at 1680 x 1050 using the screen span hack? I know that resolution doesn't show up on the list of resolutions but I didn't know if it would "appear" once it was hooked up to a widescreen display or if maybe there was some other app/driver to install to get this to work.

I know OS X will run at 1680 x 1050 since that the max resolution of the 20" Apple Cinema Display. Just not sure if/how I can enable that on my iBook.

are you talking about running the external at 1680 x 1050 or the iBook's built in at 1680 x 1050?

if it's the latter, it's physically impossible. iBook's LCD only has 1024 x 768 pixels.

I'm talking about running the external at that resolution. I'd have to squint my eyes to see anything at 1680 x 1050 on my 12" screen.

yeah, figures... (and you'd need sub-pixel rendering to do that on the iBook...)

i'm kind of surprised that the resolution doesn't show up, but again, it's a hacked iBook... i assume the resolution option probably shows up on a PB..? may want to check from there.

Well I guess I'll just try it next week... see what happens. I don't even need the 1680 x 1050 so if it doesn't work it's no loss. It'll primarily be hooked up to my PC desktop anyway. Although... this may inspire me to get a PowerMac G5 a bit faster... too bad for me I guess...

Try switchresx or displayconfigx from versiontracker.

It should work, my iMac's display is only capable of going to 1024x768, and I have the hack installed that allows me to run two displays. The external monitor shows possible resolutions of 640x480, 600x800, 832x624, 1024x768, 1280x960, and 1280x1024 even though the external monitor is only capable of going to 1024x768 @ 85hz.

Attach the external monitor for the first time while the ibook is off, then boot up with it. If the monitor returns the correct DDC mode information (it should), the 1680x1050 mode should be available in the display prefs panel without needing to use switchresx or displayconfigx.

I have the screen spanning hack and it showed my new Dell 2005FPW display and allowed me to select 1680 x 1050. No hassle. This is through VGA as my iBook of course does not have DVI.
