I have been asked to try and fix a G4 with OS X that is having issues. Here are some symptoms:
Clicking Finder causes the desktop icons to disappear for about 10 seconds, then come back. Clicking a desktop icon (for a JPEG or a DOC) causes the same thing, or the File or Edit. Occasionally, a window pops up that has the following icons in the left side of the window: iDisk, Network, Macintosh HD, then Desktop, Applications, Documents, etc. Clicking Applications causes the window to disappear, along with the desktop icons, and the Apple/Finder/File/Edit bar. They all come back a couple seconds later. The window with iDesk/Network/Macintosh HD etc will sometimes pop up again.
Here are some of the things I have tried:
Creating a new user. I cannot find a dialog to do this.
Doing a forced quit.
Tried to do a reset permissions, but the Applications menu item is greyed out.
I am sure this is a software configuration problem. I'd appreciate some pointers. I have tried some things in the troubleshooting guide (like reset persmissions).
I'm a Linux and Windows expert, fairly Solaris knowledgeable, but have little Mac experience since the IIe.
Cheers, Bill
