I've got a 14" iBook G4 that just started developing an odd issue. I cannot seem to left click on the laptop. I can still move the mouse around as well as right click but just not left click. I tried plugging a usb mouse in, but the same thing happens to that as well. I tried to disable trackpad clicking to see if maybe that is the issue but the issue still persists. I tried clearing the PRAM as well as booting into safe mode but the problem still happens. Interestingly, its almost as if the trackpad button is held down, because as soon as i reboot and get to the desktop, it seems to click on its own the apple menu(the mouse starts roughly over that spot).

I tried booting into an osx tiger install cd to see if maybe there was something up with my os(tiger), but it doesn't work in there either nor in the boot device selection menu. I'm stumped, could there be something up with the trackpad itself?

I think this is probably your logical answer.

Is it possible that some sort of debris has gotten inside the trackpad and has affected it's operation? If not, it could still be a physical fault. Replacing the trackpad may be necessary.

What happens if you have a mouse connected and inside System Preferences check the box to ignore trackpad input?

Good question, i'll try that and see what happens. I've got a 12" ibook g4 i keep around for parts, will that trackpad work in a 14"?

No idea. I don't really work on iBooks, but I'd say since these are two different models, it probably won't work.
