My ibook's screen constantly turns off and on - a second or two each time - and when it does the desktop picture often changes from the basic apple background to some picture from my iphoto folder. It seems like a software problem, but I'm worried it might be some kind of logic board/video card issue. I have applecare coverage, but I'm traveling to Thailand for a month and can't afford to be without my computer while it is being serviced.
Anyone have any ideas?

As the veteran of many an iBook screen issue (my current G4 iBook was a replacement for the last of the G3s, which kept having issues), I can say that unfortunately, it may not be a software issue.

The best you can do is at the very least an "Archive and Install" of your OS X from the installation CDs. That should keep everything of yours safe and yet also re-install the OS so that if in fact something got muddled up, it will be set straight. Try that.
