At my wits end so positing.

Gifted an ibook G4. Has Os X 10.5.7 installed. (it was gifted because LCD was broken which I replaced). Friend did not have install CDs.

I am an advanced Windows user but not mac / linux.

The ibook recently froze and has been unable to boot (aren't these things supposed to not do this?! ;>) ). I have tried most options to help to no avail. All keyboard combinations, resetting nvram, etc in OF; I cannot boot into single user mode - just can't seem to get to a solution. I turn it on, hear chime, then blue/gray screen.

So, I downloaded ubunu livecd for ppc and am able to boot and see the macintosh hard drive. Was hoping to at least recover some files. Of course, as luck has it, I can't do much because of permission issues. Then spent two hours learning about chmod commands etc and cant change permissions. No matter what I do, I get read-only permissions 'error'

So, I'm stuck. I can't get the files off, I can't figure out any way to repair the system.

I even found a friend that has Leopard install (retail) but, OF COURSE! it's a DVD and this ibook only has a CD drive

So, it's two "questions"
1. How do I repair OS (yes, I'm aware, quite open ended question) - are there third party utilities like Windows has (such as UBCD) that I can use for diagnostics and repair?

2. If I can't, ideas on permissions issue? I'd pull the hard drive if I had to. Of course, that's an hour of prying and 300 screws to remove. Gotta love the MACs!

So, thanks in advance.
A frustrated Windows user.
