The short:
I'm looking for people to comment on GUI responsiveness, preferably with an external monitor), of the following:
G3 800/900Mhz iBook vs. G4 800/1000Mhz iBook vs G4 1/1.33Ghz PB.
The long:
I have an iBook G3 800Mhz with 640Mb ram I'm using right now on an external 1280 x 1024 LCD and the GUI is indeed a bit sluggish. Just clicking things like menus, bookmarks, selecting genres in iTunes, and generally all around. Also when I copy files over the network it takes a big performance hit.
I've been looking through the forums and I haven't found much on directly comparing performance between an iBook G3 800Mhz and a new G4 1Ghz iBook or 1.33Ghz Powerbook. Is the G4 1Ghz iBook much more responsive in the GUI department? How is performance with an external display using that sad GF FX 5200 32Mb card? Is performance (not games) going to be any better on the Powerbook? I'm not talking number crunching or encoding, I'm talking about general snappiness.
I was reading a few threads saying that a guy had a noticeable performance hit when using an external monitor with his G4 1.33Ghz 12" PB. If he can tell a difference with his PB, I can only imagine it will be even wosre on the iBook.
I play with one for a minute at the apple store a few months ago, and it seemed more responsive, but it was hard to tell as I only had a few minutes to play around with it.
So, if anybody has used both a G3 800/900Mhz iBook and a G4 800/1000Mhz iBook and could comment on GUI responsiveness I'd appreciate it. Or if you've used both a G3 800Mhz iBook and a G4 1.33Mhz powerbook (I know it's almost the same as the iBook, but the PB does have faster clock speeds on ram, the system bus, and double the ram on the video card, in addition to 300 extra Mhz).
Sorry for the long post. I've never been able to write nice and concise posts.
