I am thinking about a new iBook (14'', 1.2 GHz) and I dont want to buy RAM from Apple (too expensive) so now I think ill just buy a 512 MB stick from somewhere else. I'd like to be able to install this myself, can I do that or does someone else have to do it for me? If not, is it a difficult task?

I just upgraded my PB with a 512MB module from Crucial, although it appears the PB is a little more straightforward than an iBook, and it was easy. BTW, make sure you have the right-sized screwdriver. The PB calls for Philips #00, and I only had a Philips #0. It wouldn't work at all - ended up making a quick run to Home Depot.

I just (like, 10 minutes ago) ordered a 512MB chip for my G3 iBook (been using 128MB for a year now! Yuck!) I hope it's easy to to install it
