iBook sound crackle and Z key only does

Well as my luck would have it my left speaker onmy iBook sounds blown and the Z will only do uppercase - repaired permissions and Zaped the PRam



Any Ideas ? running 10.3.9 1.2ghZ 768mb

Have you tried re-installing the OS after you've backed everything up or just using Disk Utility from the CD(DVD?) you got with your Mac. That might work, although it sounds more of a hardware problem than a software problem. Unless you're leaning on your shift key when typing "Z" and playing Pink Floyd through your iBook!

yep i'm expecting tiger to be he in the next 35 min so will try that - if no joy i'm gonna have to send it back to apple for repair

Boot into Open Firmware (Cmd-Opt-O-F on startup) and see whether you can type a z. If you can, it's a software problem.
