a good summary read for many users who come here to ask pretty much the same question every day. :D

Bob LeVitas article

few follow up points:

he doesn't mention 12" PB - its resolution is the same as iBooks, 1024 x 768.

there is also an unofficial hack to let iBook do dual monitoring.

Actually, he does...

Just a little hard to find :)

The 12-inch iBook and PowerBook and the 14-inch iBook have maximum resolutions of 1,024 x 768 pixels; the 15-inch PowerBook maxes out at 1,280 x 854 pixels and the 17-inch PowerBook delivers up to a whopping 1,440 x 900 pixels.

ah, good. i've read other articles by bob and he's usually very good. so i thought it was a bit strange that he didn't mention it... turns out he did!

silly me...

the "unofficial" ibook solutions (MCE superdrive, mirroring hack, and RAM actually up to 1.1 gigs) blur the lines a little more...

Is there any way to use iDVD on an external DVD burner? For example, if I get a Pioneer 106 burner, will iDVD recognise that I can use it since it's the same model used in the G5?

I don't believe so. Reason being is that it does not scan your FireWire or USB ports for a DVD burner but rather your internal IDE. Your external DVD burner will not reside on your internal IDE.

For completeness sake, you can get a DVD burner in your iBook G4 from MCE-Tech (http://store.mcetech.com). Granted it's not standard issue Apple and I'm not sure if it works with iDVD or not... but you can. *shrug*

no a third party dvd burner will not work with iDVD... you'd need DVD Studio Pro...
