iBook won't restart after software update

My associate who has an iBook that is about 3 yrs old, this morning loaded on a software update that included Security, iTunes, Quick Time. He's done this a bunch of times only when directed by OSX and the update icon. Now he can't turn on the computer. It is basically dead in the water. Any thoughts as to where he can proceed from here??
