Hello all!
I have just spent an entire week basically using my "new" used iBook G3. I have been a huge Mac fan now for about the past year and have been looking for a way to get into them. Considering I already had a good PC desktop machine, I saw no reason to buy another desktop, plus I wanted the ability to be mobile in my computing. So I came to the conclusion that I needed a laptop. I have spent the past 6 months tossing around the idea of getting either a 12" Powerbook or a 12" iBook (brand new) or getting an older 15" Powerbook...
The fact that I am a student and that there simply were not enough weeks in the summer to make the amount of money I really needed to buy a Mac and still get other tools (like my Camcorder) and have money left over for school. Thus I decided that I couldn't afford a new Mac nor did I NEED one that badly. Still I WANTED a Mac, I wanted to have something different than my Windows Machine (and for a while I was considering getting an older PC laptop and putting Linux on there).
Well about 2 weeks ago I made my decision, I bought a used 12" iBook G3 on eBay for about $500 including the shipping charges. I bought an older G3 because I wanted to save money on my computer, I did not see the need to buy a new laptop when my school has Powermac's that have the ability to do all my required school work. I was able to fulfill my want without blowing my budget.
Alright, enough about me and my issues with computers, on to the review of the book!
So what does my computer have "under the hood:"
PowerPC G3 Processor @ 600mhz
256 Meg RAM
8 Meg VRAM
15 Gig Hard Drive
CD-Rom/DVD Rom
12" LCD
OS X "Panther"
The Good:
Total cost with shipping $500
Far better than comparable PC Notebooks
Runs Panther very well
The Bad:
No Airport card
No OS disks
Only 8 Meg VRAM
Cannot run Garageband (not a huge problem, but would have been nice since I am a bit of a musician)
So what do intend to do with this computer?
Not a whole lot. I bought this laptop to use in class to take notes with Word, to use the internet on the go, web, AIM, email, take to the library. I figure the hard drive storage space isn't a big problem as I was going to buy an external hard drive anyways (another reason the iBook is superior to a comparable PC laptop...the firewire port).
Who should buy a computer like this:
If your needs are very simple, such as email, web, aim, word processing, iphoto, etc. and you want to get familiar with Mac OS X and do not want to spend 1000 dollars or more, then a G3 iBook is perfect.
What I would not do is spend almost $1000 on a G3, if you can find one for 500-700 (and 700 is really pushing it), then it is a good buy, anything above 800 and buy new. Basically, buy something cheap that you can take with you and get familiar with and save your money for a Powermac G5.
