iBooks going asleep while listening to audio book

I am using an old iPhone 4s with iOS 9.3.5 to listen to audio books.

For as long as the iPhone is connected to a charger this works without problems (even when the display goes dark). However, when I want to use the iPhone without charger iBooks stops reading the book to me as soon as the display gets dark.

I could find out how to stop this annoying behavior which makes it impossible to use the iPhone on battery only for listening to audio books. Can anybody here help me?
