I've just had a look at iBooks in Mavericks on my sons computer. The parental controls seem shockingly poor, the only option other than disabling the store is "Restrict books with explicit content", though it seems this is only to stop them being downloaded, they will still show in the library.

This is a real concern to me, we have books that contain stuff we don't want a 10 year old to read, for example the latest J.K. Rowling book is not at all suitable for kids, but obviously it would be of interest due to the author! Another book I have is Irvine Walsh's "Porno" (the sequel to Trainspotting) It's obviously going to draw the attention of curious kids!!

To make things worse, I set the parental controls to restrict books with explicit content, and it still allowed both these books to be downloaded!

I'm not going to set up a new iTunes account just for my 10 year olds books, multiple iTunes accounts cause too many headaches down the road.

The best option I've come up with so far is by looking in the "Sort By" menu where you can uncheck "Show Purchases in the Could" which clears everything not on the local machine, but this preference should be lockable in the parental controls.

(iBooks on the iPad isn't so bad, the interface allows you to give the kid the iPad with just a collection of their content showing, switching collections isn't as obvious as it is on the desktop version. )
