iCal accept without replying ? Editing ?

An annoying feature of iCal seems to be that if I am invited to a meeting, the appointment is not entered into iCal until I accept and hit the reply button. Sometimes I want it in the diary, but i don't want to reply to the sender.

Equaly annoying, I can't modify it, for example to add an alarm or add notes, if it is not 'mine'.

The kludge around this is to copy it, delete the original and paste in the copy. Then the appointment is mine and I can change as I like. But it is very unsatisfactory.

What am I missing here ?
