Oh, this thread is going to be fun. 
Apple has some scripts that you can add that do fun things like let you right-click on a name in the address book and create a birthday event for her/him in your calendar.
Ben Kazez has a great widget.
A wide variety of programs have hooks or plugins to create compatibility with iCal, too....
