If I have iCal alarms set and my laptop is in sleep mode will it awake from sleep for the alarm? If so, how do I prevent this from happening?

In any event, if you want to be absolutely sure, go to iCal's preferences, select advanced and check 'turn off alarms when iCal is not open." Then just close iCal before you put the computer to sleep
