iCal alerts not sticking/setting?

Ever since I started using Mavericks, none of the alerts that I set on iCal seem to stick. I'll create an event and set an alert for an hour before, but as soon as I double click the event to make sure it's set up properly, I see the alert disappear almost immediately after I open the event. I sync my Google Calendar with iCal as well and when I set a pop-up alert via Google Calendar, I think it works.

Anyone else have this problem?

Google will not update/sync with ical if you:

a) Select 'Message with sound'

b) Only change an alert, and nothing else

It appears that if you make a minor change to another field b) is over come.
