iCal and badges

Hi,

I have Mountain Lion. In iCal, i have appointments set up for today (eg dr 10pm). However, i do not see the badge icon on the little iCal button. I also have notifications set to badge app icon= on.

how come i dont see any badges for today? shouldnt I

please help
