iCal - Automatic edit mode?

Years ago when you selected any iCal event you automatically went into edit mode which I liked much more than what we do now. IIRC the top of the screen was a permanent edit area.

Is there any way to accomplish this now?
Is it possible to load an old version of iCal into Snow Leopard?
