The sound is set on an event-by-event basis. When you choose the "message with sound" notification type, a new pull-down menu appears where you can set the notification sound you want to use. The sounds are the same ones you can use as the system alert sound, and are expanded in exactly the same way (add new sounds in AIFF format to /Library/Sounds and/or ~/Library/Sounds).

I would like to know how you change the default sound so that it uses the sound I want for every new notification instead of defaulting to the 1st sound on the list which is "basso".

A global iCal sound notification setting is what I am looking for, not just the setting that toggles it when you make a new calendar event. Anyone know a way to do this?

I think I found the solution:

It appears you can change the com.apple.ical.plist and set the default iCal alarm sound. I'm installing xcode at the moment to test this out and I will post my results soon.
