iCal hung up

I just bought my second iPad and have been setting it up. As I tried to activate iCloud for the contacts and calendar apps (working on my iMac), the iMac calendar went into a mode where it displays a message "updating iCal calendars" and is completely hung up. I can't close the iCal and it won't let me restart. I restarted the iMac by unplugging it but the condition of iCal is the same. Also, all the iCal data seems to have disappeared.

This is very discouraging, to say the least. Any ideas?

Update

OK, I've been able to shut down my iCal on the iMac by canceling the iCloud function. My iCal data is all gone, however. I've tried to re-sync the iMac from my piPhone, which still has my iCal data on it. Nothing happens, even though I've set iTunes to sync all calendars.

Any ideas?
