iCal Preferences won't open

Hi all, I'm newb here so I apologize in advance if I've left out pertinent information.

I'm using a MacBook 10.6.8, recently I tried to add an GMAIL address to the calendar. I did it by following the instructions here --> http://www.ehow.com/how_6778059_sync-gmail-ical.html

It didn't work and now I'm not even able to get into iCal preferences. When I click Preferences nothing happens at all.

I've read other discussions about deleting cache in the HOME > LIBRARY and/or HOME > LIBRARY > CALENDAR

I don't have the calendar directory at all and there are no files that relate to *ical* at all.
