iCal will not read calendars from backup

I got a new MBP 13" and an iPhone4. I've synced the two for a couple of weeks.
Last night when I synced them all the content disappaired. (Calendars and contacts). I restored my contacts from my TimeMachine backup.
For the Calendars I restored the files in ~/Library/Calendars and trashed all the ical plists. But when I started iCal again it will not read the Calendars even though they are back in the folder (~/Library/Calendars).
Any ideas how to get my calendars back?
