iChat and AIM

Hi,
When someone adds me on iChat, do I get notified?
I'm new to Mac and this is really stressing me out
I used my school e-mail account to create AIM ..
and I can get on iChat just fine, but my friend says that she's waiting for my approval?
Also, my other friends have added me onto their list but I'm not seeing them on my list.. not to mention that I didn't get any notification for these too.. is this normal?

It's been a while since I've used AIM but as I remember one did not get a message when they were added to someones buddy list and the other way around. There was no 'Approval' process.

Yes, you can add both .mac and .me accounts. I've never used Jabber so I have no idea. I would imagine that it would work though.
