iChat Away status issue

When I set my status to "away" friends tell me that I still appear with a green dot next to my name on their buddy list. This is happening to some of my friends, but not all. How can it be fixed? (PS. I'm using AIM thru iChat)
 
could this in any way be related to the iphone app's updated ability to push messages to my phone?
