iChat Buddy List Annoyance

Is anyone else having this problem, and is there a fix for it as me and several of my friends are having the same problem.

If someone that isn't on your buddy list sends you a message, and you try to add him/her to your buddy list, it shows him/her as going offline. You can message the user, but he/she will not show up on your buddy list until you restart iChat.

What's going on?
