Considering iChat is a Program and not a service no.
And I've had no problems through iChat's AIM service either. Close and reopen ichat and try again.
If it still doesn't work, and you're a student on campus, your ITS are just being themselves.

there is something wrong with the AIM network, with the buddy lists or something like that . . i could log onto AOL, but i got an error when trying to view my buddylist . . . it is at AOL's end, that is where the problem is
