iChat menu item hack?

is there a way to get the iChat menu item to list the available buddies before the status and away messages? i have a lot of away messeges that i would like to keep, but i would rather beable to see who's online without scrolling down the whole list. any ideas? or shall i be off to submit another suggestion to Apple?

what about just using the buddy list
if you want to hide it just press cmd+1
why do you want to see your buddies in the drop down menu?

command+1 would require iChat being the frontmost app. ideally i would like to just use the menu item, but that's the ideal, and i've been using the buddy list fine. so i guess it's no big deal.
