iChat won't keep my group changes

I have over the years created various groups through iChat and AIM and now I'm sick of them. I wanted to delete all my groups and just have a "Buddies" group but when I clear out the groups I'm not using, and then log off and log in to iChat, it resets and brings them back.

is there some trick? Some way to get AOL's servers to remember my choices?
