Yea if they want more revenue from services :)

I think Time Machine is a better option for most users but I never use for new Mac

I don't really see the point of such. If you want to save important files to your iCloud Drive, make sure they are listed in the Documents and Desktop folder.

For overall backup purposes, Carbon Copy Cloner and Arq Backup are better suited for fast backup. The latter can be configured to be saved to the cloud service of your choosing.

I would be interested. Currently using iPhone and iPad as my personal devices, have a Mac mini running in the background solely for Time Machine Backups. Would allow me to get rid of that and be i(Pad)OS only.

There’s a thread on reddit gaining traction atm:
Obviously I would only use such service if it is End-2-End Encrypted.

All the other cloud services have balked at backing up in the cloud in my experience. For example: OneDrive had unlimited storage until people started backing up businesses (thousands of terabytes) - then they limited it to 1TB because of that. Using Arq with consumer Google/OneDrive/Etc accounts - they slow down the upload badly.

A lot of backups would run up iCloud storage significantly. My family uses almost 600GB of iCloud storage not counting our backups which would be in the terabytes if we totaled it up - not to mention recursive TimeMachine backups.

But, I would LOVE an in cloud storage option. Hopefully this comes with a massive iCloud storage bump! As a long time ARQ user - this would be great. :D
