So I am the proud owner of an iPhone X. In the past, I always restored my backup from iTunes when I got a new phone and all was good. This year I decided to give iCloud backup a chance and setup my new iPhone from there.

Unfortunately that didn't work as expected. While all apps and data, as well as keychain data, were restored, most of my app logins were lost.

Facebook, Twitter, Tweetbot, Instagram, you name it... they all asked for a login. I reiterate: my keychain data was definitely restored, as stored Safari passwords did work. But app logins - no dice.

At the end I restored from iTunes once again and I had all my data back.

So here's my question: is this expected behavior? What have you guys experienced when restoring from an iCloud backup to a new device? Did your app logins stick or did you have to re-enter them all?

Same experience. I ended up doing an encrypted backup in iTunes. Still had a few apps which I had to log back into, like Netflix, but I think that is normal.

Mine have been fine, when I started Facebook there were the password selection options above the keyboard as expected. I selected my personal one and it asked me if I wanted to use Face ID with Facebook. Same with Twitter and my Arlo app.

Those are the only ones I’ve tried so far but it all seems normal.

So after an iCloud restore to a *new phone* you didn't have to re-enter the Facebook password? Correct?

If that's the case, I wonder what's the difference between mine (and awdods') and your backup.

I would assume that he had passwords stored in his keychain. My backups usually log back into apps but I had to manually log back into each one, some of them used the passwords saved from safari though

I have passwords stored in my keychain as well, but most of the apps don't seem to make use of the keychain. Yes, some apps will then use Safari to ask for a login, but that's not the same as having the login already stored in the app itself.

So I guess I will have the better experience by using iTunes in the future when getting new phones. Oh well.

Well, technically I suppose you'd still say it was re-entering passwords, they weren't automatically filled in, but they never have been with an iCloud backup for me.
I didn't have to type them in, they're stored in the keychain so it was just a matter of selecting from the options (I have more than one account for Facebook for instance) that were presented to me in the autofill boxes above the keyboard.
