I’m probably being paranoid or reading this wrong, but a while back I came across an article that claims iCloud/Drive compresses photos.
https://photodoto.com/do-photos-lose-quality-when-airdropped/

“iCloud Photos preserves media in its original format, resolution, and frame rate. So, according to Apple, iCloud does retain the resolution and the format, but the statement says nothing about compression. Many users on popular forums like Reddit have done their own tests and concluded that iCloud does compress the images to some degree.”

I’m assuming there’s some sort of compression happening on upload to save bandwidth, but is this compression lossless? IOW, a RAW image uploaded to iCloud Photos or Drive will stay lossless, and a lossy JPG will not lose further quality when compressed?
