iCloud drive on new Mac

Hello,

I currently have over 0.5TB of data stored in iCloud. I am soon going to buy a new Macbook pro, which will be the base model with 128GB SSD. Can someone please tell me what will happen to the when I set up the new Macbook with regards to the amount of data in iCloud, will it just try and download everything and then just stop when the SSD is full or is it smarter than that.
