iCloud e mail

If my son sets up iCloud e mail he will get the Push e mail, syncing of Photo's, contacts and Calendar. It says you need to turn on automatic downloads. If he does this will ge get teh apps I download? We share and apple ID. If he turns off auto matic doewmloads will the Push e mail, sync of contacts & iCal still work?
