iCloud mail unable to connect

today, the mail app was unable to connect to the icloud mail server, mail.me.com. i toggled off and on the mail checkbox in system preferences for icloud and its still the same result. i checked apple's system status and there was an icloud mail issue but it was resolved. could this be the end? could it be fixed with custom server details and an app specific password? is it just a result of an apple system issue?

Hello friend, unfortunately the email service has stopped working.

The connection only works from El Capitan now, or Yosemite which I haven't tested yet. An alternative that I used was to use this software: MailMate - https://freron.com/ "it is native to 10.12 onwards, but it makes previous versions available". I am currently logged into my Gmail and ICloud through it.
