iCloud not email not working

I just made the switch from my ipad2 to the new iPad but when using it with my @me email I receive emails instantly on my 4s and multiple computers but have to open my mail app on the iPad to receive email. I have it set up on push the same way I did on my previous iPad yet it does not work. my new iPad specs are 16gb 4g on verizon. any help would be appreciated.
