Am I right in assuming icloud will not work at all on the ipod touch 2g? Will at least the thing where you can re download a song you purchased on another device for free and automatic downloading at least work on it?

It's possible App Store integrated features may work, because the App Store behaves much like a conventional web app. If it did support you, you would already see the "purchased" tab in iTunes at this point. Other features are not compatible.
