If I make the move to iCloud Photo Library, is there a way to still backup my photo library to an external hard drive as I do now? My concerns are about the unlikely chance that my login ID is compromised or Apple somehow loses part of my library.

I know that this is unlikely, but I don't like the 1% chance of my login being stolen and having my daughter's lifetime of photos being deleted. Am I crazy? I like the security of my own backup, but want the convenience of the cloud.

Just back up your system as normal, making sure that you tell your Mac to keep full resolution copies.

And however unlikely, these things aren't at all crazy. I agree with you totally, convenience and off-site backup of cloud, also security of own backup. I do exactly this :)
