iCloud Photo Library Help

I just spend the last few days backing up my photos from my iMac in Photos to iCloud Photo Library. I think I had around 78gb of photos.

I was hoping to have more space on my phone with this.

But in iTunes when my 7 plus is connected is shows all 78 gb taking up space on my phone.

I have searched online to figure out how to fix this or what I did to cause this...but no luck

Can someone fill me in on what I did to cause the photo to be in the iCloud photo library and physically taking up space on my 7 plus.

Do you have optimize photos clicked on I yur phone settings? Meaning only a thumbnail will exist on your phone instead of full resolution photo?

I have been researching this all myself as I have been curious about iCloud of late.
