I'm in the brink of binning the whole thing off and just using Dropbox... This whole implementation seems so un-apple like. It doesn't just work... Not for me anyway.

So, as it's not working for me I have a question.

What happens to the original photo taken on your phone after its uploaded to icloud? Does it sit there until you delete it?

"Does it sit there..." - where is "there"?

Sorry... In 'all photos'.

Just wondering as the service is meant to free up space on your phone but if the original is still stored locally doesn't it defeat the point of it?

Hey bumbo,

Yes your phone and every device downloads a local copy. You have two options under Settings. You can download and keep originals OR Optimize iPhone storage. The second option will still keep a local copy but will be lower resolution than the original and save you some storage.
