Recently purchased a MacBook Air and I’m trying to get my iCloud Drive set up. I upgraded the storage to 2 TB but my iCloud Drive says there’s not enough space when trying to transfer 1 TB data from an external drive on my iMac.

I was hoping to use the iCloud Drive to store the files that are otherwise connected locally to my iMac. I don’t want to have to drag around an external HDD if I can avoid it.

Any ideas?

How big is your internal drive on the iMac? It will copy the files to a system folder first before uploading them I’d imagine.

you might be able to upload them in batches, if your internal drive is too
Small to it all at once

I have a 500 gb SSD but it's 1 TB worth of files. Should I turn off optimize Mac performance? I'm just trying to create an online storage area without having to buy a NAS so I can access files on my laptop instead of carrying around an external drive.

Something tells me this isn't the right way to use iCloud Drive. if so I can cancel the 2 tb and just go with 200 gb's for backups.

You can use it to store more than you have locally (turn optimise storage On) but getting them uploaded initially will be a bit challenging/time consuming.

I’ll post with more details when I’m at my desktop in the morning.

Ok great thank you. I would rather not use any local storage for these documents. It’s just a collection of comic books that I access but don’t need it stored locally.
