It says:
iCloud keeps your information safe, automatically backed up, and available anywhere you go — with 5GB of storage for free.

But if you upgrade to a 50GB premium plan, shouldn't you have 55gb of storage?
Instead Apple removes the 5GB of free storage. This is just Apple being extremely cheap and petty.

Why not apply this logic to the next tier? They say you’re getting 200 GB, but what happens to the 50 GB from the first tier plus the 5 GB you would get for free? You might be reaching here.

You pay for what you get.

Pay for 200gb, get 200gb + 5gb (free) = 205 gb
Pay for 50gb, get 50gb + 5gb (free) = 55gb

The logic and question is simple. What happened to the free 5gb?
Of course Apple is in their right to take it away, but that’s my point.

It’s implicit in the tiers. If you want to think of it as Tier 1 giving you 45 GB that you pay for plus the 5 GB you were getting for free, that might help.

Implicit or your assumption?

Show me where it says that in the tiers. I'm simply going by what is posted on their site.

And your logic is wrong. How does Apple "take it away"? Do they delete all the files from your free 5GB storage when you upgrade? No.

Literally every storage provider does this. If you're going to accuse Apple of doing something wrong, you better include Dropbox, Google, Microsoft, and others.

Show us where it says we should be getting 50GB ADDITIONAL storage.

Where did I say they delete the files!?

By your logic, the 50gb of 'additional' storage should then be presented as 45gb then.

It's posted in black and white, 5gb of free storage.
The tiers are clearly 50gb, 200gb etc..nowhere does it say 45gb

I don't care about other storage providers.

Question: when you purchase Tier 1, do you get 50 GB of storage?

It doesn't say that you get an additional 50 GB of storage - it says that you get 50 GB of storage.

That's an interesting point of view. And here's my understanding: You get 5GB free storage with the free plan. And you get 50GB paid storage with the paid plan. Plan is upgraded, storage is replaced, and data is moved.

After all, you can't have a free trial and a paid service at the same time.

Compare with Microsoft. When you buy a subscription that includes 1 TB of storage it is added to your free or previously gained storage. I have 1.04 TB.

Whatever the legalities may be, Apple does seem stingy.

You left the 5gb free tier and joined the 50gb paid tier. You're not combining tiers, you're switching tiers. Apple didn't remove the 5gb, rather you removed it when you left that tier. At least that's the way I see it.

Interestic topic about semantics, @satchmo .

In the bill of sale, "50" could be regarded as title, not value, similar to string vs integer. Under this logic, you're paying for the plan that's titled "50GB". However, this might indeed be misleading. Not that I'd care too much about the extra 5GB but interesting topic nonetheless.

Any lawyers in the group?

The iCloud+ page does not say that anywhere. It says that you get 5 GB free without a plan, and then offers multiple plans with storage totaling 50 GB, 200 GB, or 2 TB (or more). It does not say that you are paying for 50 GB more storage - it says that you are paying for more storage to get a total of 50 GB, etc.
