.ico files to be used to replace folder icons?

I have some icons I downloaded that are both .ico and .png files and I want to use them to replace icons/folders on my Mac. I choose get info for the files and copy the icon in the upper left and choose get info for the other folder and try to replace it in the same spot of the get info box, though it doesn't work.

What file extension does it have to be? How can I make them work?
