iCombi & Bluetooth Question

I purchases an iCOMBI Ap21 for my nano 5th gen. Work perfectly and gives my Jaybird headset full control including track forward and back.

Can't fathom how this little device is able to do it when my iPhone 3GS 's bluetooth is crippled.

Anyway, the question....

Anyone plugged oned of these iCOMBI devices into an iphone 3GS and had it work...just nervous about plugging it in...
