icon does not apper on desktop when using outside connections

Any time I try to load pictures from a camera, connect any outside device such as a Maxdor One touch 4 to the ports in my mini mac, the icon does not appear on the desktop. Is it my ports? I tried moving the connections around by putting my printer into another port and it works fine. This problem seemed to of happened when I connected a new printer. My computer will not recognize any outside connection

Does the drive appear in Disk Utility? You are talking about USB devices, correct?
